Let's go SHOPPING!!!

I love getting out into the city... venturing out with no place to go.
Granted, I don't get to do it nearly as often as I'd like. In fact, today, I stayed inside all day resting and recooping from this long, busy week.
But I came across some pics from Betsy's last couple of days here, when we went to Friday Market (the market that's held on Fridays) and National Theatre to get some fun Ugandan memorabilia. I thought I'd post them to give you an idea of being 'out in the town' here!

A couple of kids on their way home from school...
most Ugandan schools require the students to wear uniforms.
We'll see all different color combinations of uniforms as we're on our own way to school.
Jerry cans (not sure if I'm spelling that correctly) are what the kids carry clean water in. We see kids carrying them on their heads, carrying one on each arm, and even little ones lugging them down the road to and from wherever they're going.

These are some 'rattles' that one of the Ugandan ladies was selling. The round hollow balls are filled with beans and sound really interesting! The flute in the bottom left of the pic is made out of bamboo reeds. I love these kind of crafts; it's so amazing how these ladies can make such artistic creations out of very basic supplies.

The rattles tend to run about 1,000 shillings each, equivalent to $0.50.

Kikois!!! A kikoi is a large, thin sheet of fabric that are very common to wear as a shawl during "colder" weather. They come in any color imaginable - as you can see! They also only cost about 5,000 or so... which is pretty cheap! ($2.50)

And most importantly, PAPER BEAD NECKLACES!!!
I love my necklaces, even if I don't wear them nearly often enough.
They're made with triangular pieces of paper, which are placed in a glue-like consistency and then wrapped around and around until a small bead is formed.
And the best part is, each necklace is only about 1,000 shillings!

This is Betsy and I hanging out after a fun afternoon of Friday market shopping.

  2. I just bought a tie rack/shelf to hang all of my necklaces from. I've been trying to wear them when I actually wear "pretty" clothes (aka, something other than jeans and a sweatshirt, which is my normal attire). Haven't yet managed to fit my scarves into my attire, but I'm working on it :)

  3. What treasures! Is it difficult to ship items from there? Thinking about you and praying for you!
